CARING FOR YOUR BABY: THE BOTTLE-FED BABY
A formula is milk that has been modified to make it resemble mother’s milk as much as possible. You can prepare a perfectly satisfactory formula at home by adding water and sugar to cow’s milk, and boiling the mixture to kill any germs and to make it easier to digest. You can also purchase excellent commercially prepared formulas that come in either concentrated liquid or powder form and require only water to reconstitute them.
Your doctor or a nurse in the hospital will show you how to prepare the formula and sterilize the bottles and teats. However, in case you find you must do this suddenly, without guidance, the methods that follow are the simplest.
Unless your doctor tells you to discontinue it sooner or later than this, I suggest that you continue to sterilize things until your baby drinks only from a cup. By then it is enough to be certain the cup is really clean, and the milk pasteurized.
Preparing the formula
Measure carefully the number of ounces of (cold) water called for, and put it in the two-quart saucepan. Measure the exact amount of sugar, and add it to the water. Stir till the sugar is dissolved. (Sugar melts more rapidly in water than in milk, and it is also easier to see whether it has dissolved completely.) Measure and add the milk, and stir a few times. Then pour it through the funnel into the bottles.
