THE EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE PILL (ECP): HOW TO GET IT AND ITS COST
How do you get emergency contraception? You can go to a doctor or a Family Planning Centre for emergency contraception. Most Sexual Health Clinics and Emergency Departments in large hospitals also have emergency contraception available. Not all doctors prescribe emergency contraception, so it may help to find out where you can get it in case you need it some time in a hurry.
What do emergency contraception pills cost? The combined pill method of emergency contraception costs about $5 from Family Planning Centres.
Combined emergency contraception is not available commercially at present so if a local doctor prescribes the emergency contraceptive pill for you, you may have to buy a packet of contraceptive pills from the chemist. Then you take them the way the doctor tells you to for emergency contraception. Because you have to buy the whole pack it will cost more, and prices vary. It will cost extra if you decide to use the anti-nausea medication as well.
The progestogen-only pill method of emergency contraception costs about $20 from the chemist and a little less from Family Planning Centres.
