CHEST PAIN WORSENED BY MOVEMENT
Description and Possible Medical Problems
If you’ve been reading this chapter from the beginning, you know by now that not every pain in the chest automatically means a cardiac problem is brewing. In fact, if you have a pain in your chest that is localized in one spot that is less than an inch in diameter and it occurs primarily when you’re coughing or breathing, you probably have a small viral infection in your lung. This is probably the cause if you haven’t been feeling well in recent weeks. Another possibility is that the muscles or bones of your rib cage have been injured in some way, especially if breathing or taking a deep breath makes the pain worse.
If you think a viral infection is causing the pain in your chest, you should make an appointment to see your doctor. After a visual and physical examination and perhaps a chest X ray, the treatment your doctor will give you is an easy one: rest and an analgesic such as Motrin or Tylenol, two pills or capsules taken four times a day or as needed. If your doctor discovers that your pain is caused by a rib fracture, the treatment will be exactly the same as for a viral infection, since there is no other treatment than to relieve the pain.
