GAMES FOR IMPULSIVE COUPLES – INTRODUCTION

Dennis and Diane were a typical impulsive couple. They met, fell in love, and got married within two weeks. A few months later they began to lose interest in one another yet managed to keep their marriage afloat by constantly changing the external parts of their lives. They went from one temporary job to another. They lived from paycheck to paycheck and built up huge debts on their credit cards. They bought items they did not really need and took trips to exotic places that they did not have to visit. They were always getting “high” on one kind of drug or another. Their motto: “Live for today. Who knows what will happen tomorrow?”

Impulsive personalities cannot delay gratification—they must have what they desire now. They are fixated in what Freud called the oral stage. They need constant feeding and continual satisfaction of their cravings, and (like suckling infants) must have it immediately or throw a fit. They usually have had parents who did everything for them and did not allow them to learn to do things for themselves. Such parents typically say, “I don’t want my child to go through the hardships I faced when I was growing up.” So they go overboard and make it too easy for their youngster. The child becomes spoiled, unable to fend for himself or herself or cope with the daily grind of reality, commitment, long-range planning, and responsibility.
