THE HARMONIOUS COUPLE – DISADVANTAGES
These four points are of course difficult to achieve even in the best of times. In present-day America, with its emphasis on role equality (an ideal impossible to achieve), instant gratification, and such relational hazards as AIDS, sexual abuse, and entrapment, they are even more so. Perhaps that is why more than 50 percent of our marriages end in divorce, over half of our adult population now chooses to be single, and about a third of all families are single-parent units. In short, for many, the disadvantages of committed relationships and sexuality seem to outweigh the advantages.
In actuality, the advantages of a harmonious relationship with one special person far outweigh the advantages of single-hood. Such a relationship brings out the best in us as nothing else can do. However, few seem capable of achieving a harmonious, truly loving and caring relationship. And if humans come to think that they are not capable of doing something, their tendency is to rationalize that it is not worth doing. Hence many people derogate marriage.
